New consultation on VIA Rail's Interim Extreme Weather Fire Risk Mitigation Plan
VIA Rail Canada would like to inform residents of communities near its rail infrastructure that a VIA Rail's first Interim Extreme Weather Fire Risk Mitigation Plan has been brought to the attention of your municipal officials and other levels of local government, including Indigenous governments.
We are sharing this plan in order to get feedback from your representatives and take it into consideration when finalizing our plan.
In the interest of the safety of railway operations and to address concerns about the risks to the safety of communities during extreme weather conditions, Transport Canada is demanding this plan following the adoption of a ministerial order that applies to railway companies.
The purpose of VIA Rail's plan submitted to your local representatives is to outline our response in the event that a location - which we share with your municipality including our rail infrastructure - would rise to an "extreme" fire risk level.
The creation of this plan is mandatory and, as such, we are asked to submit our final plan to Transport Canada no later than September 19, 2021.
Given the timeframe required, we would like to obtain these comments before August 23, 2021.
For more information concerning the Ministerial Order (MO 21-06) of July 11, 2021, which is issued pursuant to section 32.01 of the Railway Safety Act (RSA), please consult the Government of Canada’s website.
